Secret Shopper Assignment

      I was impressed by the reader's advisory conversation that I had. When I went in, I had decided to ask for a fantasy novel but did not have anything else in mind! The librarian skillfully led me through a conversation that was focused on my likes and encouraged talking about what I liked (Spratford, 2016). She also was genuinely interested and enthusiastic about the process. She listened to my answers and asked follow up questions to narrow down the options (Saricks, 2015). The fantasy genre is one of her favorites, so she only used the library's card catalog as a tool. However, she said that genres that she was less familiar with required the use of Goodreads or Novelist Plus. In the end, she recommended a book series that I knew I would love (I read the first one a long time ago and always meant to read more!). I was happy with the results and would definitely go back to her again if I needed another suggestion!

The results: A fantasy novel that included mystery, humor, and magic.

Prompt 10: Books From the Past to the Future

  How have reading and books changed since you were a child, for you specifically? I was an AVID reader from the time I could read on my own. My mom tells everyone about how she would call me to dinner and I would yell back "I can't right now, I'm reading!".  While I am still an avid reader,  my frequency of diving into a book has changed -  I have responsibilities that cause short periods of time where I am not reading much. However, I just read while I am eating now. :D The formats that I enjoy a story through have changed as well. Even though I still prefer a book in my hands, I do love the convenience of an eBook (I would have been blown away by this format as a kid). I've even been known to have the same title in both formats so I could switch back and forth. Prompt 9: Marketing

Marketing our fiction section is an important part of what we do. There are a wide variety of ways to promote the items we have available. For our library, I would focus on these three: 1) Book Displays. Saricks (2005) noted that books displays with a small group of books and a descriptive sign are an effective way to promote items in our collection. Our library has designated spots for displays. We utilize different themes for each display and have books ready to check out! I particularly like the idea of a Good Books You May Have Missed cart near our desk. I will be trying this one out! 2) Annotated Book Lists. Annotated book lists that are created by our staff with books that we offer is an important resource (Saricks, 2005). For one of my previous classes, I made one for Teen Stress Relief. It included books, DVDs, programs, and kits (we had meditation kits that included the DVD and meditation pillow).
